Every year, we let our saints choose us.  The saint who has chosen my son for 3 years is St. Joseph of Cupertino.
That's his photo graph.  It's interesting to see which saint chooses you for the year.

Materialism at Christmas

They say that Christmas has become materialistic. And how true this is.

But surely it is right that Christmas is materialistic – in the proper sense of the word!

Let’s consider this: God – A spirit somewhere out there in the universe He created, decided to materialise and come down to earth.

He materialised, assumed a physical form, as the human Jesus, born by the Blessed Virgin Mary.

God materialised to be amongst us, so that we may see Him, speak to Him, listen to Him and hopefully learn from Him.

And most important of all, to be saved by Him. God – Jesus. The Spirit materialising for us.

Now how wonderful is that?

Do we ever stop and wonder about the real miracle of Christmas and the true meaning of materialism?

Women of the Bible I would Like to Meet:: Part 3:: Martha

 Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.  She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying.  But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.”  But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

I think, when I meet Martha, I will find her in the kitchen cooking.  She has the Gift of Hospitality.  

Martha, you were good friends with Jesus and His followers, weren't you?  How did you feel about that?

Did Jesus visit you often? 

Were you always busy cooking for Him?

What were His favorite foods that you cooked?

Did you get to meet His Mother, too?

The path renews daily.  As many times as I’ve walked this road and have seen the seasons change, I only know the direction in which I walk.  New experiences wait with the twists and turns of the road.

I have walked this path in rain.  I have walked this path in the heat of blissful summer days.  I have walked with path hearing only the crunch of dry leaves under my feet.  I have walked this path in ice and snow hoping my boots will keep me steady as we go.  I have walked this path alone.  I have walked this path with friends.  I have walked in silence.  I have walked chatting with friends dear to my heart.  I always, though, walk with my dog.  She is the reason I walk.  The path changes.  The people change.  The reason remains the same.

I know the area, but I don't know the people I meet.  Some people are friendly.  Most are not.  Some people cross the street to avoid my dog.  Some come up and greet her.  Some people glare at me as we walk. Even though I know the road, I don’t know what will happen.

Holy Is His Name

 Mary, the Mother of God, spoke these words as she and her elderly, pregnant cousin praised God for the magnificent gifts God had given them in their children.  Not in ordinary circumstances, for Mary had been told by an angel that she would be the Mother of God, if she chose to accept The Father's invitation to bear His Son.  Mary in all humility only asked, 

"How can this be since I do not know man?

After being assured by an angel that

I'm Stuck! How to Pray When Words Won't Come.

Slam!  You've hit a wall.  Life is incredibly difficult, filled with storms and attacks.  All seems bleak, and you are struggling to get up and function.  You know you need God.  You know you need consolation, but it seems that The Lord has withdrawn.  You've heard it said that when you feel most alone and inconsolable, it is when He is nearest to you.  You don't feel anything.  The cross is heavy that minute, that hour, that day, that week, that month, that year.

Your words stick to your throat or in you heart.  You cannot utter a cry to God.  How can you return to the presence of God, if there are no words?  How can you communicate with The Lord and open up the channels of consoling and redeeming grace?

Stop
And be
Still.
Put Yourself in the Presence of God
and
Listen.

Trusting God with St. Therese - A Book Review

I love reading books about Catholic spirituality and every once in a while I'll come across one that stands out from the rest. Trusting God with St. Therese by Connie Rossini is THE best book I've read all year and the one that has been most helpful to me spiritually. Which is saying a lot since I've felt somewhat "stuck" spiritually these past few years.

Well, this book "unstuck" me. It helped me examine my level of trust in the Lord and I soon realized that I didn't trust the Lord as much as I thought I did. This book has helped me immensely in this area. Over the past year I had been questioning the Lord as to why it seemed as if I was not making much progress in my spiritual life and I feel that Connie's book was an answer to prayer for me. She asked me to be a beta reader for Trusting God with St. Therese so I was able to really immerse myself deeply into the book and  I can't get over how greatly it has enriched my spiritual life.

One of the things that really struck me as I read Trusting God with St. Therese is the amount of spiritual ground Connie Rossini covers in this book. She makes it very easy for the reader to grasp the spirituality of "The Little Way". I'm not sure I've ever read a book quite like this. The format is unique in that it not only leads us through defining moments in the lives of both St. Therese and the author's but also shows us how to incorporate the way of "trust and love" into our own lives. The book breaks away from formats used in traditional saint and spirituality books while at the same time giving the reader a big glimpse into the life and spirituality of one of the greatest saints in the Catholic Church. There are many books on St. Therese out there BUT NONE LIKE THIS. The chapters in this book cover areas such as: the three spiritual stages, the importance of the early years in the development of trust, signs of a lack of trust in God, despair and how to overcome it, forgiveness, suffering, dealing with emotions, scruples, presumption, etc...

I can't count the number of times over the years I have read a book on Catholic spirituality and at the end have felt as if I am still in the dark as how to integrate what I have learned into my own life. Not the case with this book. I found the "Questions for Reflection" and "Practical Suggestions" at the end of each chapter extremely helpful. (This would be a great book for book clubs!)

Trusting God with St. Therese may possibly be the most spiritually significant book I have read in years. I highly recommend it.
